| Which name servers (NS) should I use? |
The correct NS settings are listed in the Hosted Domains section of the Control Panel and are displayed in bold letters.
|
| What is a Domain Name System ? |
DNS stands for Domain Name System. It is used for mapping domain names to IP addresses. That is
necessary since Internet operates only with IP addresses. In order to use domain names like www.example.com a system is required so the domain can be resolved to an IP address. This system is called DNS.
|
| How does the DNS work? |
When someone types in a domain name into a web browser their Internet Service Provider (ISP) DNS server looks into its cache for an IP address associated with that domain name. If the DNS server does not have a cached entry it sends a DNS lookup query (to the Name Servers set for the domain) which if successful returns the IP associated with the domain name back to the ISP and consequently to the customer's computer. Once the domain is resolved to an IP the browser can access the web site.
|
| What is a NS record ? |
The NS (Name Server) record specifies a host name (usually sub-domain) where DNS records for a given domain can be found.
|
| What is an SOA record? |
SOA stands for Start of Authority and indicates basic properties of the domain and the zone that the domain is in.
|
| Is it necessary to change my domain NS (Name Servers)? |
If you want to host your domain with us, yes a change must be made. If you do not change the Name Servers your domain (and site) will either not work or continue to resolve to the old server where they used to be hosted.
If you choose to register a domain name with us or to transfer it to us we will change the Name Servers for you and you will be able to manage them through the hosting control panel.
If your domain is not registered or transferred to us you will have to change the Name Servers from the control panel that you use for managing the domain name with the current domain registrar.
|
| How to change the Name Server (NS) records of my domain? |
If the domain name is registered with us or if it has been successfully transferred to us you can change the Name Servers from the hosting control panel. All you have to do is to go to the Domain Manager, click on the NS icon and then click on the Edit Name Servers link - this will allow you to change the Name Servers to the new ones.
If the domain has not been registered or successfully transferred to us you will have to change the Name Severs from the control panel that you have with the current domain name registrar. If you do not have any means (control panel or account) to make the change with the current domain registrar you will have to contact their support team and request instructions how to change the Name Servers of the domain.

| How can I modify my A or MX records? |
The A record and MX record can be modified from the Custom DNS Records section of the hosting control panel. Just enter the desired IP address or mail server host in the corresponding field and click on the Change button.
In case you would like to reset an A record to the default IP address or an MX record to the default one just hit the Reset button next to the corresponding record.
|
| What is an MX record? |
The MX record refers to Mail eXchange. The MX record is used to specify the mail server that is responsible for delivering the e-mail (incoming e-mail) send to @yourdomain.com e-mail addresses, i.e. the mail server which handles the incoming e-mail for your domain.
In case you wish to set foreign MX servers to handle the incoming e-mail you will
have to change the MX records to the foreign ones. This can be done through the Custom DNS Records section of the hosting control panel.
You can have more than one MX record and you can assign priority to each one of them. The MX with highest priority will be the first one to be used and in case it is not available the e-mail will be automatically re-routed to the second, third & etc MX record(s).
|
| What is an A record? |
The A record (known as an Address record) binds a given domain/sub-domain to an IP address.
The A record of a domain name points to the server where the domain is hosted. Without an A record a domain/sub-domain will not work since there would be no IP to which they resolve.
|
| What is a DNS record ? |
The DNS record contains information for the A, NS, MX, CNAME and other types of records associated with a given domain name. Sometimes it is referred to as a Domain zone file or Domain zone record.
|
| What is a CNAME record ? |
CNAME records stands for Canonical NAME and it refers to the expected or real name of the domain.
This record is used to associated new sub-domains with the actual domain name without the need to define IP address (A record) for each sub-domain.
Have in mind that if a CNAME record is defined for a sub-domain any A or MX records
for that sub-domain will be automatically ignored.
You can add additional CNAME records anytime through the Custom DNS Records section of the control panel.
